The Scotiabank Giller Prize today announced its 2013 longlist from the University of British Columbia’s famed Museum of Anthropology. The event was co-hosted by UBC’s Creative Writing Program and the Vancouver Writers Fest (VWF).

Today, in a morning press conference that drew over 100 media and members of the publishing industry, the Scotiabank Giller Prize announced its 2011 shortlist. The six finalists were selected by an esteemed jury panel made up of award-winning Canadian writer and 2009 Scotiabank Giller Prize finalist Annabel Lyon; American author, memoirist and Guggenheim fellow Howard Norman; and acclaimed UK playwright and prize-winning novelist Andrew O’Hagan.

Johanna Skibsrud has been named the 2010 winner of the Scotiabank Giller Prize for her novel The Sentimentalists, published by Gaspereau Press. The announcement was made live on Bravo!, BookTelevision and CTV.ca at a black-tie dinner and award ceremony that drew nearly 500 members of the publishing, media and arts communities. The five finalists were selected by an esteemed jury panel made up of celebrated American novelist and short story writer Russell Banks, acclaimed UK author and journalist Victoria Glendinning, and distinguished professor and award-winning author Alistair MacLeod. The shortlist was chosen from 96 books submitted for consideration by 39 publishing houses from every region of the country.

Selected by an esteemed jury panel comprised of authors Warren Cariou, Elizabeth Hay and Richard B. Wright, the five finalists were chosen from 94 books submitted for consideration. Those books were submitted by 35 publishers from every region of the country.
